PaperWorkers Local is very proud to welcome home Alabama native and letterpress printing boat-rocker Amos Kennedy.
In an interview for The Economist Amos refers to himself as "
Just a humble negro printer." The simple fact that he's an artist who has been mentioned in The Economist at all questions that assertion. The additional fact that after relocating to Detroit he has none-the-less been named by Southern Living as one of "
50 People Who are Changing The South in 2015" tells us that his sort of humility has quite a reach. Here's a picture of him:
Kennedy may be a humble man. His work isn't. He may wear a pair of slouchy overalls and quietly go about making his work. But his work is born of African-American culture and history and pulls no punches. His letterpress prints confront and often provoke the viewer with quotations, names and boldly assertive opinions from the Struggle for Civil Rights up to the present moment. Like his forbears Amos works humbly toward profound consequence.
